On February 19, when the date for the canonization of Fr. Hannibal was officially declared, the sanctuary of the Evangelical Rogation was filled with the citizens of Messina (Italy) who came to give their homage to the future saint of the city. Pilgrimages coming from other places outside Messina also commenced. On February 28, for example, pilgrims from Milazzo (Sicily) arrived to pray in front of the remains of Blessed Hannibal. Works are undergoing to prepare the new place for the remains of Blessed Hannibal. The project is scheduled to be inaugurated on Easter along with all the new facilities of the sanctuary: the Crypt where the body of Blessed Hannibal will be transferred, the confessionals, the sala ‘ex-voto,’ the new museum and the center where people can avail religious articles. A new access to the crypt will also be opened utilizing the old entrance of the institute at Via Santa Cecilia. Newspapers, and the local TV stations started transmitting information on the organization of the sanctuary in view of the canonization. The provisional program and the drafts on the proposals regarding the celebrations will be publicized as soon as things are finalized with the Archbishop of Messina. The encounter with the archbishop is scheduled within the first week of March. An agency called: “News Service Group Pellegrinaggi’ has started to gather reservations for those who want to participate at the canonization ceremonies at St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City come May 16, 2004. ![]() |
